hooded merganser

Lophodytes cucullatus

Description:

Males have distinctive fan-shaped crests; often the crest is not displayed, and this bird looks quite different. These are much smaller than other merganser species.

Habitat:

I seem to find them in protected bays and estuaries, small lakes and ponds.

Notes:

I think this species rivals the wood duck in its striking appearance (very subjective).
