Black-spotted Newt

Notophthalmus meridionalis

Description:

They are typically olive green with numerous black spots and a yellow belly. They have smooth skin, and a vertically flattened tail to help them propel through the water.

Habitat:

They are found in Northern Mexico and South Texas, they prefer large, shallow bodies of water with lots of vegetation. They are fully aquatic.

Notes:

This little guy is endangered, while I was on a school trip for my herpetology class we found a pond with them in it. Ended up catching 72 of them :)
