Calliope Hummingbird

Selasphorus calliope

Description:

I watched this hummingbird 'protect' his feeder everyday. He would sit on top of the pole and anytime another hummingbird came near he chased them away.

Habitat:

Not quite sure as to where he lives.

I was taking pictures as he was protecting his territory from other hummingbirds, it was quite funny to watch.

Calliope are very rare vagrants to North Carolina and usually only show up in Winter. Ruby-throated are common residents throughout Summer through early fall.
In addition, Calliope have a white line above the gape.
