Dolichovespula maculata
A huge wasp's nest about 30 feet in the air the size of a basketball at the end of a tree branch.
Thanks very much, Gerardo, Dan, Antonio, and Ava! I thought it was very nice against the leaves as well! Dan and Gerardo, I think I'll keep it at this until an expert can look into it. :)
Beautiful photo with the nest and autumn leaves!
Wow J,you surprise me with this one:)great cache, congrats
I'm not sure J, I can only say for the nest I saw because the hornets were flying around.
This one is very unique J , but is hard to tell which exact wasp species is from.
Could it be another species, too, or is there a characteristic of the nest I should look for?
Thanks Gerardo and Dan! I didn't see any flying around, so I figured it was probably abandoned!
Huge! I saw the same thing last year. I saw a few flying around, that's how I ID'd them.http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/722...
