Picoides pubescens
A surprisingly small bird, in fact the smallest species of woodpecker in all of North America, this Downy Woodpecker has a lot of contrast in its coloring. It dawns a white chest, black wings with white spots and a pretty red crest on its head.
This one likes the cherry trees in my back yard. There is a dead limb on one of the trees and this woodpecker has hollowed out a hole that it can get its whole body into.
Over the summer I have grown fond of this particular individual. At first I could hear it pecking all the time but rarely caught a glimpse. As it has grown used to me, it now lets me walk right up the tree as it continues to do its work.
