Sandhill Crane

Grus canadensis

Description:

Adults are gray overall. The average weight of the larger male is 10.1 lb, the average weight of females is 8.9 lb. The Sandhill Crane has a red forehead, white cheeks and a long dark pointed bill. Its long dark legs trail behind in flight, and the long neck is kept straight in flight.

Notes:

There is a large migration through Fairbanks every year. In their wintering areas they can form flocks of 10,000 or more. "The oldest unequivocal Sandhill Crane fossil is "just" 2.5 million years old, over one and a half times older than the earliest remains of most living species of birds" - Wikipedia

Thanks - It was awesome to see the large flocks when they came through last month. I was a little late with the camera but these few didn't mind posing for me.
