Yellow-eyed Penguin

Megadyptes antipodes

Description:

Large distinctive endemic penguin. Pale yellow head, a yellow iris and a band of brighter yellow extending from the eye to the back of the head. This species has a Red List status of endangered.

Habitat:

Breeds mainly on the Sub-Antarctic Auckland and Campbell Islands and Stewart and Codfish Islands among others, with small colonies on the south east of the South Island of New Zealand from Banks Peninsula to Bluff. Population numbers have been a bit erratic due to various factors including shortage of food, disturbance from predators and bio toxin infections over the years of recording.
