Thanks Renee. California is in the middle of a drought and it is rough on wild life especially the bigger mammals like Coyotes and bobcats. Let it Rain!!

Congrats Hema!

I am still inclined to say this coyote has mange. There should be an nice smooth short coat underneath, even if the winter coat looks patchy. The skin of this coyote looks rough and crusty as well as hyperpigmented (darker than normal). Domestic dogs with mange look very similar.

I found this nice site with loads of photos and information. Thought you might like it.

Very interesting...I am so glad this pup is not suffering for mange as someone suggested; that it is only molting...I remember seeing a camel molting in Ladakh and it really looked very sad. So, what did you win??? :)

Thanks Sukanya. Looks like this coyote is going thru a seasonal molt. We have a drought and it is warmer than usual. Maybe due to the climate change it is a little earlier.Typically,Coyotes molt once a year starting in May and ending in July.

Forest, the disproportionate ears, lanky legs, possibly suggest a juvenile?
