Malayan Tapir

Tapirus indicus

Notes:

Tapirs inhabit jungle and forest regions of South America, Central America, and Southeast Asia. The four species of tapirs are the Brazilian tapir, the Malayan tapir, Baird's tapir and the mountain tapir. I saw these ones at Adelaide Zoo but I didn't note the species - thank you to Xiaoxuan for helping me out there. Apparently all four species are listed as endangered or vulnerable.

All four tapir species are endangered or threatened, largely due to hunting and habitat loss. Happy World Tapir Day 2013!

It's a Malayan tapir...you can tell by the black and white pattern...all south American species are uniform in body color...

Lovely tapir and picture Shanna and it is very sad to hear that the four species seem to be endangered and vulnerable.
