Western Screech Owl

Megascops kennicottii

Notes:

Came across this little owl while doing tiger rattlesnake surveys in Sabino Canyon. The owl was tangled up in a sticky vine called Coulter Spiderling, and was unable to escape. Likely happened as it tried to catch a pocket mouse or other prey on the ground and landed in the plant. My friend (hands pictured in 2, 3, 4) removed the owl while I documented. After looking the owl over, we realized the flight feathers were too damaged for it to fly, so we took it to a wildlife rehabilitation center in Tucson. It was later released back into Sabino Canyon!

Great work. We need more people like you to keep our wildlife safe. Admirable effort.

Thank you for the comments! I have some kind of connection with screech owls. I saved one last week on a highway in Tennessee, and another one earlier this year on Fort Hood in Texas. They are amazing creatures, but I would like to come across them under better circumstances!
