Cardinalidae
This is the nest of a family of cardinals. We loved watching them build it in the bushes next to our deck. There were 3 babies but only a day or two after they hatched they disappeared and none of the birds ever returned. That was several months ago and no other birds have moved in so I felt okay removing the nest for my 3 year old to see. It is approximately the size of a soft ball constructed of leaves and twigs, mostly stolen from my window boxes.
