Ardea herodias
Great blue herons stand about 115–138 cm (45–54 in) in height and, as their name implies, mostly a bluish gray, thighs are reddish. The neck is reddish-gray, with black and white stripes down the front. The face is light-colored with a pair of black plumes running from just above the eye to the back of the head. The bill is greenish-yellow. Both sexes look similar.
Typically found on wetlands, lakes, and rivers, but occasionally found in uplands hunting small rodents and amphibians. Nests in colonies in treetop rookeries as well as roosting in trees.
