Sand Live Oak WASP GALL

Quercus geminata

Description:

About 3/4" inch across , on a sand live oak branch at lyonia preserve , Deltona, Florida .

Habitat:

Upland Scrub, Lyonia Preserve, Deltona , Florida. (Still not sure why the map says "DeBary" when I type in "Deltona"..... odd.

Notes:

This had been previously identified as a female flower. I have been corrected on this by a fellow Florida Master Naturalist, with many more years of experience than I. My colleague has ID'd it as a wasp gall. Oaks bloom in the spring, not in autumn. He couldn't specify which wasp, as there are 100's that create galls.

Update : not a flower, although it looks like one. Oaks blossom in spring. This is a wasp gall. Confirmed by Florida master naturalist.

I think that is the new growth around the forming acorn, it is part of the tree for sure.
