Martes americana
Martens are carnivores related to weasels and mink. Although they aren't particularly rare, they are not often seen.
The habitat where I photographed this individual is a wetland with quite a lot of spruce and tamarack trees. There was also a good variety of understory vegetation mixed in with the trees.
This particular marten was coming to an area where a few bird feeders were set up. There were several suet feeders and it's likely the marten was eating some of the suet pieces that had fallen onto the ground beneath the feeders. There was another individual a few meters away that other photographers were watching.

Great shots - very nice sighting!
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated! If, in your own time, you could follow António's advice and put your information in the right fields that would make this spotting perfect. Thanks in advance!
muy hermoso....
Wonderful spotting. Great photos of this beautiful animal.
Thanks sreischel61,the ideal in each spotting is to put the info in the respective windows, Description, habitat and Notes. It make the spotting complete and the spottings can be elected to the Spotting of the Week,we only consider spottings with good information in the respectiv windows
This marten was in an area called the Sax Zim Bog. I don't think it's technically a bog but it is an area filled with spruce and tamarack trees. There is a lot of wildlife in this habitat. The specific place where this was taken had some makeshift bird feeders set up and there was some seed and suet on the ground. I suspect the marten was coming there to eat some of the suet that had fallen on the ground. At the time I was photographing this individual, there was another one just a few meters away that others were photographing.
Great action shots sreischel61,it would be very nice if you add some more info about your encounter and the habitat where you find it,thanks on advance and thanks for sharing
