Amanita caesarea is a possibility. Were there any veil patches or warts on the cap, or was it completely smooth? It'd also help a lot to dig up the entire mushroom and take some shots of the base.

Amanita velosa doesn't have a yellow veil ring on the stipe, so we can rule that out. It doesn't quite have that bright orange color to it either, it's more of pinkish color.

This one looks like Amanita Caesarea, but the fact that the stem is white makes me think that this is Amanita Velosa, but I don't know if it grows in Australia...

Mac, look familiar? http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/231... I battled to get an ID for this one and managed to narrow it down a little bit, but you might better luck for an exact ID. Great spotting, by the way. I was chuffed when I found mine :-)
