Bitter Melon

Description:

Small yellow flowers grow into firm, spiked fruits about the size of a golf ball which then split open to reveal sticky, red, fleshy seeds. Newly hatched milkweed assassin bugs can be seen on the ripe fruit; not much of an odor from the fruit, perhaps they find the color enticing.

Habitat:

Very neat looking vine growing at the base of a citrus tree.

Notes:

The closest match I have found is Momordica charantia, but this variety look a bit different to me. What do you pros think?

Assassin bugs prey on other insects so not the fruit that attracts them, but the insects that are drawn to the fruit.
