Rata vine

Metrosideros fulgens

Description:

A stout stemmed liane vine. Dark green pointed leaves on a stout petiole. Unmistakeable red and yellow flowers occurring in terminal cymes. Blooms in late summer through to mid winter.

Habitat:

Found in lowland forest down to about Westland.

Notes:

Can put on a beautiful show of colour. Although a vine, older specimens that have climbed up species such as tree ferns can often become self supporting if the climbing host dies and rots away.
