American Avocet

Description:

To feed they swing their bills back and forth to catch invertebrates. They have the winter plumage with their heads being gray. During breeding season adult heads are a rusty color. The body is white and wings are black and white. They have dark, long, upturned bills and long light colored legs.

Habitat:

The area has several small ponds with dunes near the coastal beach. These small ponds were near the destroyed boardwalk, but a new boardwalk was under construction. They are in this area during migration and winter.
