Cooper's Hawk

Accipiter cooperii

Description:

Bird of Prey. Length: 17" Wing Span:28" Plumages nearly identical to smaller Sharp-shinned Hawk's but head larger and tail longer, distinctly rounded; adult has black cap. Immature belly whiter, with fewer streaks than Sharp-shinned.

Habitat:

Woods Range: Resident in New England; also spring and fall migrant.

Notes:

We spotted this hawk high in a leafless tree at the edge of a large field. No doubt he was searching for a meal. A bunch of crows harassed him and flew to another tree.
