Dog-day Cicada

Tibicen canicularis

Description:

Green and black body. Wings have green veins near the base.

Notes:

Also called a Dog-day harvestfly. This particular cicada was not alive when I found it so I was able to get a clearer photograph. There were plenty of live ones nearby that moved too fast for me.

I suspect linnei complex.
Some populations in the mid-Atlantic may be hybrid (?)
(linnei x winnemanna)
(linnei x canicularis)
per. comm. + review of specimens and sound files

Please compare T. linnei (http://bugguide.net/node/view/32143) with T. canicularis (http://bugguide.net/node/view/12461)
