Lobster mushroom

Hypomyces lactifluorum

Description:

Bright orange fungus. This specimen 5" tall with a similar diameter. Found scattered about pine forest floor.

Habitat:

Sandstone glade.

Notes:

So named due to the resemblance to a cooked lobster's shell. Not a mushroom, but a parasitic ascomycete that grows on mushrooms. Edible, can be found stocked in some large grocery stores.
