Here's the periodical cicada I saw in Missouri in 2011. I did quite a bit of research to find the correct species. It seems there aren't as many 13-year cicadas as there are 17-year. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/180...

I love the cicadas and I'll definitely post more pictures! I remember the summer of 2004 we had one of those extreme hatchings in central/southern Indiana and they were actually killing the twig ends of trees from depositing all their eggs. I never thought about taking pictures of them though. I remember them being called the "17 year locust" but obviously they weren't locusts!

Really good call!

I was looking thru a lot of the TIbicen pic's and adding id's or agreements. In this case I simply responded to the Annual cicada name without actually looking at your species id - 'til after I pressed post.

There are three species in your region with some ambiguity in id (linnei, pruinosus and canicularis in part). We think the geographic variations in morphology and call coupled with possible blending contributes to the identification issues. There is also the possibility that some of these taxa may actually be composed of more than one species.

I'd love to see more of your cicada pic's, and as we move into summer, please take pic's of your cicada encounters.

That's what I have listed as the scientific name for this, but didn't realize it had a different common name. Thank you for the information. I've got a picture of a different species of cicada that I saw in Missouri a few years ago (it was one of their periodic hatchings and they were EVERYWHERE). I'll have to post it!

I suspect this is linnei (wing shape is suggestive).
I must admit, I am not a fan of single trait conclusions for id's, but I have been looking at this species across its range for a few years now and those from Indiana usually conform to the basic diagnostics for linnei.
