Brown Pelican

Pelecanus occidentalis

Description:

Body, 3 ft :wingspan, 5 ft Weight: 15 lbs Grayish brown feathers, Reddish patch of feathers located on the back of the neck. White feathers on head. 16 foot long beak.

Habitat:

Can be found in estuaries and coastal marine habitats along both the east and west coasts of the Americas and throughout the Caribbean.

Notes:

Brown pelicans are some of the biggest birds in the Caribbean. They feed by dive bombing head first into the water and opening their beaks which releases a giant beck pouch that scoops up a bunch of fish like a fisherman's net.
