Greater Yellowlegs

Tringa melanoleuca

Description:

A common long-legged shorebird of freshwater ponds and tidal marshes. The Greater Yellowlegs frequently announces its presence by its piercing alarm calls. Long, bright yellow legs. A rather long neck and bill that is slightly upturned and blunt-tipped. A white rump and tail.

Habitat:

The area had several small ponds with dunes about 40 yards from the gulf coastal beach. These small ponds were near the destroyed boardwalk, but a new boardwalk was under construction. They are in this area during migration and winter. Sea Rim State Park consists of 4141.1 acres of Gulf coast beach and marshland in Jefferson County, 10 miles west of Sabine Pass.
