Three-striped Poison Dart frog

Ameerega trivitatta

Description:

Largest of the poison dart frogs with females reaching 55mm and males up to 42mm. It has finely granulated skin on its dorsal surface with smooth skin on flanks and ventral surface. It can be quite variable in colour with typically green striping but also occurs in orange and as in this case, yellow.

Habitat:

Found in sub tropical and tropical moist lowland forest over most of northern South America. It is diurnal and terrestrial. It eats mainly ants which it finds on the forest floor. Eggs are layed under fallen leaves in the rainy season and hatch after about 15 days. The males guard the eggs and will then carry the tadpoles to a small pool or water filled crevice and they become froglets at between 41-54 days.

Notes:

The images are of the yellow phenotype found in the lower reaches of Rio Huallaga about 40mins drive out of Tarapoto. Ref: Wikipedia, Ameerega trivitatta.
