Horned lark

Eremophila alpestris

Description:

Small birds with a striking black and yellow face patterns. Brown on upperparts and pale below. This is a male, he has tufts or horns that stand up on his head (pic 2).

Habitat:

Spotted on a rock with matching lichen colors. This is mostly a sagebrush area in the Whiskey Dick Wildlife Area.

Notes:

Horned larks are typically found on the ground. In the open areas of western North America, horned larks are among the bird species most often killed by wind turbines. In 2013, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the subspecies streaked horned lark as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
