Hard to tell if water snake or cotton mouth. I kept my distance. This was the second snake we saw on the same walk tonight.

Understandable! Better to be safe if you don't know what it is :) It isn't a cottonmouth though, if that makes you feel better. Though water snakes are harmless, they tend to be very grumpy!

One of the water snakes in the genus Nerodia, hard to tell from this photo. I would bet N. fasciata
