Southern Black Racer

Coluber constrictor priapus

Description:

Found this guy in my back yard. About half a meter long. Surprisingly, he let me get pretty close. There's no zoom on an of those photos, which I took with my phone. They're usually pretty skittish in my experience, but he didn't move once, with the exception of his tongue, for our entire two minute encounter.

Habitat:

I think my lawn is Bahia grass, and there are oak trees around. My back yard, where I found him, has a lot of oak leaves scattered around, and there is a large patch of what I've just discovered is called snake plant right on the other side of my fence near where he was.
