zelotes sp
A shiny black spider scuttling across the road.
To be honest, I was leaning towards Zelotes too. That helps somewhat, but a species ID is a bit challenging still. There are a lot of them in the US.
Zack, this was narrowed down to a Zelotes on Bug ID
Thnx Zack! I was hoping it would be a trap door spider.Gnaphosidae makes a lot of sense!
This is definitely a spider you can't identify past family rank with just a photo. Examination with a microscope is required. That being said, all I can tell you with certainty is that this spider belongs to the Gnaphosidae family. Gnaphosa and Zelotes are two genera of shiny black gnaphosids. There are a lot of total species in these two genera, and thus a lot of possibilities.
