Western Amazon Ant

Polyergus mexicanus

Description:

Roughly 6-7 mm in body length, all red as shown. Note very large "node" between thorax and abdomen, sickle-like jaws without teeth.

Habitat:

Bottom of arid canyon surrounded mostly by scablands, shortgrass prairie with juniper, Gambel's Oak.

Notes:

Amazon ants are obligatory slave-makers with Formica spp. ants as victims of their slave raids. Identification made from these images by James C. Trager, world authority on the genus Polyergus.
