Description:

Very hairy fungus - when I touched it, fine clouds of dark brown spores floated away.

Habitat:

Growing on a dead black birch log. Note the edge of a penny in the lower left corner of the photo

Yes, looks like Stemonitis sp., which is a slime mold and goes in the "other" category. Nice spotting.
