Corvus corone
Common west-european all-black corvid, looking pretty much like raven, but smaller in size (some 50 cm in length). Except for the color, looks exactly like its first cousin, the two colored Hooded Crow.
Common in urban and rural settings; seen in cities and towns, parks, and agricultural fields. Here, in Alps, at the entrance to Mt Blanc tunnel.
Closely related to Hooded crow (Corvus cornix). The two species were longtemps considered as the same species, the Hooded crow considered the eastern subspecies of Carrion one. In regards of area of distribution, they share Eurasia - C. corone (Carrion crow) in the west of Europe occupying smaller area; and the extreme east of that landmass. Hooded crow occupies much larger territory, from Italy-Germany to China.
