Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toad

Gastrophryne carolinensis

Description:

It was scared up from a thick layer of leaves when I made some noise nearby. It froze as I came close to it.

Habitat:

Oak forest among a thick layer of leaves

Notes:

Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toads are adapted to digging and life underground and they feed primarily on ants. It is not a true toad, but rather a species of microhylid frog. While not a true toad, it is so called because it is terrestrial.
