Melanerpes erythrocephalus
Adults are strikingly tri-colored, with a black back and tail and a red head and neck. They fly to catch insects in the air or on the ground, forage on trees or gather and store nuts. They are omnivorous, eating insects, seeds, fruits, berries, nuts, and occasionally even the eggs of other birds.

Belated thanks for your nice comments, Christiane, mary and beaker98. I have grown to love this species. They're funny though - they see you watching them and then hide behind the trunk of the tree, popping out now and again to see if you are still there. In this case, I was!
Great capture! These are few and far between in my neck of the woods, so I don't get to see them often. Thanks for sharing Maria!
Aren't these the most wonderful woodpeckers. Just love them.
WOW.. Great shots.. I wish I could see one of them! :)
