A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Ursus Americanus
Cinnamon brown in color with a blonde strip along the ridge of his back and a blonde spot under the back of his ear.
The American black bear is distributed throughout North America, from Canada to Mexico and in at least 40 states in the U.S.
This gorgeous creature was busy munching on berries. I would not have seen him if I did not look back toward the roadside pull-off about 1/4 mile away. I saw quite a few onlookers with cameras and binoculars looking toward me. I was on a trail on the mountain side, as I turned, I noticed about 100 yards away, a small brown spot moving in the brush. Zooming in with a cheap camera, I was able to see the bear. I just missed capturing the shot with him on his hind legs twisting around to look at something in my direction, maybe me! He then ventured off the other direction and I made sure the bear spray was still on my belt. So happy I never had to use it.
