Black swallowtail (male)

Papilio polyxenes

Description:

We have seen lots of these beauties this year, probably as a result of planting fennel (the host plant for their caterpillars) in our butterflies garden. A dozen or the caterpillars are able to consume a 4' tall fennel bush in a matter of days, but luckily it grows back quickly & we have watched several broods develop this summer.

Habitat:

Semi rural wildlife habitat

There is a fiery skipper & sachem & an ailanthus webworm - my hyssop is a very popular destination for the local Lepidoptera!

Truly captivating! I love the skipper for size comparison in the second photo! There is an Ailanthus Webworm, too!
