White Puffball

Lycoperdon candidum

Round, white with small spines. Very common and widespread.

Sandy soil next to a marsh in Cedar Creek County Park, NY

Also known as Lycoperdon marginatum. Edible (though I have never tried one). Apparently Lycoperdon (Genus of this mushroom) translates to "wolf-farts" from classic Greek (Lyco = "wolf", perdon = "to break wind"). This gave me a good laugh!
