This cute woodpecker did not mind the high winds and stayed on the top of an old dead tree pruning and sunning....I have not seen many birds lately as is normal here, the very high winds are keeping them in hiding... : (

Thank you for the ID, Liam.
I am still checking, I do not understand why it has so much dark color in the face, eyes and chest!?

Thank you, Jemma.

Thank you, AshleyT and Anne Marie McCaffrey, I will keep the search.

I would say Hoffmann's...

The black-cheeked has a lot of black on the face and back and it has a barred belly.

Thank you, AshleyT. Could it be a Costa Rican Black-cheeked Woodpecker, it looks a lot like it?!

Thank you, Maria dB.

Thank you so much, sarah in the woods. Will check that... I have lots of woodpeckers here but this one was not like the others!!??

These are the only Melanerpes sp in Costa Rica,
Golden-fronted doesn't have dark around the eye or have the yellow at the base of the bill that extends outward on the face. Bill isn't right either. I am leaning towards Hoffman's but not everything seems to fit for it either

Looks like golden fronted with the pattern of head colors. Some sources say they are in Costa Rica.
