Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillar

Battus philenor

Description:

Maybe 1.5". Fast little critter! Those horns were rather rubbery -jiggled when it went full- speed! When it was annoyed, a small yellow osmeterium popped up, but I didn't really smell anything bad. This was my first Pipevine! Exciting!

Habitat:

Transition zone between Longleaf pine Sandhill and mesic hardwood hammock. ( parking lot, actually!)
