Abortiporus biennis
Off-white, fuzzy, irregularly shaped fungal growths around what appeared to be animal droppings. Pretty hard and tough for a fungus. It has darkened and shrunken (to half its original size, as in the last two photos) with a couple of days' time.
Grows under a deck in the grass.
When I tried to separate it from its substrate using a stick, it was nearly impossible.
ForestDragon, I'm excited to finally know what this is! I believe you're right. Thanks!
Guess what?! I think your spotting is the same as my weird one. I finally got an ID and I am pretty sure that yours matches the description as well. :-)
Hmm, it doesn't quite match, but the resemblance is there. Yours has pronounced fissures while mine's surface looks more dense and fuzzy. Still, that's really cool!
Not sure if this is a match but this is what I was reminded of.

I am leaning towards the fruiting body of a slime mold. Yours is slightly different than my spotting but has some similarities for sure.
I think I saw something similar on the weekend. Reminded me a lot of coral. I'll let you know when I post it, see what you think.
I think I may be wrong about the puffball. I took a closer look at the two "things" on the lower left in the second image. Those look like the "above" view of some sort of mushroom.
Meanwhile, I never thought it was mud. I've stepped in enough of it over the years to be able to identify it fairly easily. :) and maybe :( as well!
From far away, I too thought it resembled a puffball, but the structure seemed kind of open at the bottom. I'll check it out tomorrow if it's still where I found it using a twig, since I don't want to get too near this stuff for obvious reasons. :)
Dan, I can't blame you. I thought it was mud too. lol
Reminds me, by appearance, of a puffball, but since I have no credentials in mycology I can't pretend to know for sure. For example, I have no idea if puffballs can be fuzzy, or appear in clusters.
Never seen anything like it. At first I thought it was more firm like a coral fungus, but then I thought it might be fuzzy and you confirmed that in your description. I also just thought that was mud until I read more.
