Myristica fragrans
A thick fleshy greenish-tan husk covers a brown nut that is covered with 'tentacles' of rubbery red.
Tropical rainforest orchard in the Puna region of the Big Island of Hawaii, near Pahoa.
Another cash crop that is not invasive and can be grown organically. The red part provides the spice mace (there's not much in each husk, perhaps explaining why it's so hard to find mace to buy in the store). The nut has to be dried or it will mold, but it can be grated fresh or dry.

The red "tentacles" are awesome!
