Elk

Cervus canadensis

Habitat:

Recently reintroduced to Great Smokey Mountains National Park, elk are beginning to repopulate areas where human predation had wiped them out. The males present were "bugling" to protect their harems from challengers.

Notes:

Always an impressive sight, these approached the park visitor's center in late afternoon.
