Coccotrema Lichen

Coccotrema minutum

Description:

White, ball-like lichens that looked a bit like rounded off dice. The lichenologist who identified this for me told me this species has not been seen in Kodiak for around 80 years. That is probably because not many people are looking, and many don't know what to look for.

Habitat:

Commercial fishing dock

Notes:

I was told by the lichenologist who identified this for me that this is "described as Perforaria minuta from Kodiak Island by Degelius. It is actually an Ochrolechia in the broad sense and we are currently working on a paper in which we place it with molecular data."
