Indian Bison

Bos gaurus

Description:

Gaurs are probably the largest bovine species in the wild. They are massive, with some weighing over a tonne!! They are usually in groups, but sometimes huge males can be seen wandering around alone. I have been seeing a herd of gaurs in this part of Karnataka since last year during post monsoons. Not sure if i'm seeing the same herd or not but the number has been increased. It was in morning when we decided to hike back, we came across this herd on the 3rd mountain slope from us, descending down to the thick forest patch in the base. It was treat to watch them descend slowly, one of the best moments for us!
