Buteo lineatus
This one flew in and lit on top of a house down the block. Fortunately, I had my telephoto lens with me but he was still a good distance away. I tried to get closer but he flew away. Some kind of hawk I think. Looking at hawk photos, maybe a Cooper's Hawk?
A neighborhood with lots of trees and gardens. Lots of other smaller birds live in the area and feed in the gardens and hang out in the trees.
Thanks Mark. He was almost too far away for my lens. Hawks fly around that area a lot. Next time I am in town, I'll try to get some better shots of them. Joe
Ashley, thanks too for your ID. Yeah, the photos I looked at of red-shouldered hawks and Cooper's hawks look very much alike to me. I appreciate the help. Joe
Joshua, thanks for your ID. Yeah, I was looking at pics of red-shouldered hawks and those and Cooper's hawk looked very similar to me so I went with Cooper's hawk. Thanks again. Joe
Hi Joey! While it overall looks similar to a cooper's hawk, there are several differences. Cooper's hawk of any age will have a dark cap on top of the head, while this bird has a brown head. Cooper's also have very long tails with thick bands on them, and they don't have as much white on the back as your bird. So this is an immature red-shouldered hawk, almost an adult. The streaking on the chest is beginning to turn to the classic barred look of the adult. Hope this helps!
