Habitat:

Regiões áridas e semi-áridas. Este foi encontrado no 16º andar de um apartamento em habitat urbano. Também podem ser encontrados em habitats suburbanos.

Arid and semi-arid regions. This one was found on the 16th floor of a flat in an urban habitat. Can also be found in suburban habitats.

Notes:

Schistocerca cancellata é um gafanhoto popularmente conhecido em inglês por "bird locust" pertencente à ordem Orthoptera, subordem Caelifera, infraordem Acrididea (sin: Acridomorpha, Tetrigidea), superfamília Acridoidea, família Acrididae, subfamília Cyrtacanthacridinae, Cyrtacanthacridini. Aparente e duvidosamente, há duas subespécies de Schistocerca cancellata: S. cancellata cancellata e S. cancellata paranensis (Burmeister, H., 1861), onde desconheço a distribuição do último.

São polífagos e se alimentam de uma grande variedade de plantas selvagens e cultivadas. É uma das poucas espécies de Schistocerca que, verdadeiramente, formam enxames e podem formar enxames migratórios densos através de uma extrema forma de plasticidade fenotípica denso-dependente, conhecida como fase de polifenismo do gafanhoto. As asas são rendadas e a coloração geral envolve diversos tons de marrom. O sujeito retratado media, em média, entre 5 e 5,5cm de comprimento. Apesar que a OSF (http://orthoptera.speciesfile.org/common...) registra este gafanhoto em populações maiores no Sul do Brasil, é sabido que as grandes tendências migratórias deste Orthoptera deixam margem para dúvidas sobre o seu estado real de distribuição. Registros apontam a presença de espécimes no Nordeste do Brasil, onde este foi encontrado. Tentarei fornecer uma fonte para esta informação eventualmente, pois é difícil de encontrar. Registros apontam que S. cancellata é adaptado às regiões áridas e semi-áridas.

Schistocerca cancellata is a locust popularly known as "bird locust" in the order Orthoptera, suborder Caelifera, infraorder Acrididea (syn: Acridomorpha; Tetrigidea), superfamily Acridoidea, family Acrididae, subfamily Cyrtacanthacridinae and tribe Cyrtacanthacridini. Apparently and doubtfully, there are two subspecies of Schistocerca cancellata: S. cancellata cancellata and S. cancellata paranensis (Burmeister, H., 1861), and I'm unaware on the distribution of the latter.

They are polyphagous and feed on a wide variety of wild and cultivated plants. It is one of the few species of Schistocerca that are truly swarming and can form dense migrating swarms through an extreme form of density-dependend phenotypic plasticity, known as locust phase polyphenism. The wings are lacy and the overall coloring is brown in multiple shades. It measured around 5 to 5,5cm in length. Although OSF (http://orthoptera.speciesfile.org/common...) registers this locust in wider numbers in the South of Brazil, it is known that the great migrative tendencies of these Orthoptera leave room for doubt on a true status of distribution. Records point the existence of specimens in the Northwest of Brazil, where this one was found. I will try to provide a source eventually as this is quite hard to find. Records point S. cancellata is adapted to arid or semi-arid regions.
