Pileated Woodpecker

(Dryocopus pileatus

Description:

I've been trying to find one of these in the woods near where I live. Finally noticed wood flakes "raining" down from a tree while walking my dog. Didn't get the best pictures but at least this one didn't instantly fly away when it heard me.

Habitat:

Wooded area near a public park. Range includes North America and Canada.

Notes:

Largest Woodpecker (roughly the size of a crow). Only other know Woodpecker that is bigger is the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, which is thought to be extinct. Although sightings have been reported.
