A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Castilleja unalaschcensis
The yellow things that look like petals are actually specialized leaves. The flowers themselves are above each yellow leaf, and you can see there is a green tube-shape coming out of each flower. Though they look beautiful and perfectly innocent, these plants are hemiparasites of grasses and forbs, stealing nutrients with their roots.
Densely vegetated cape overlooking the ocean with lots of wildflowers including Kodiak Keyflower (Dactylorhiza aristata var. kodiakensis), Wooly Geranium (Geranium erianthum), Wild Flag Iris (Iris setosa), Chocolate Lily (Fritillaria camschatcensis), Nootka Lupine (Lupinus nootkatensis), Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), Western Canada Goldenrod (Solidago lepida) and others
