Great-crested grebe

Podiceps cristatus

Great-crested grebes have beautiful head plumage during courtship and breeding season. Their young look very different with zebra-type striping on their heads. The grebes usually have one or two offspring.

These are one of my favorite bird species. I first saw them in Switzerland in 2012 when they were doing a courtship dance. Now, six years later, I got to see how they tend their young.
