A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Vulpes vulpes
Red fur with dark legs and ears and white tail tip. Rump is mottled red grey and brown. White chest.
Sacramento Valley grasslands and near human habitations
It is believed they live near humans to avoid coyotes. Originally thought to be the same animal as the non-native red foxes escaped from fur farms, genetic testing has found the Sacramento Valley red fox to be its own subspecies, most closely related to the threatened Sierra Nevada red fox.

Hey Hedgehog!
Sounds like you know lots of awesome info on the Sac Valley Red Fox!
My name is Sophie Quisquater and I am a research biologist working with UC Davis and the California Dept. of Fish & Wildlife. We are currently working on a project to monitor and evaluate these foxes.
I was really hoping you could provide a bit more detail on where exactly you saw this vixen and her kits.
Please send over any relevant info to my work email squisquater@ucdavis.edu and I'd be happy to answer any question and tell you more about the study.
